Environmental Planning Services

HOW’s environmental team specialises in the project management of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for large and complex development proposals with specific focus on the residential, mixed-use, retail, commercial and leisure sectors. We are closely integrated with our planning team and co-ordinate the work of technical specialists on behalf of developers and prepare Environmental Statements (ES) for submission in support of planning applications.

In addition to our core EIA services, we advise clients on the management of environmental risks associated with potential development sites and provide sustainability advice to ensure that development proposals are acceptable in planning terms.

Graduate/Consultant Environmental Planning Opportunity

The role will involve the following key responsibilities:-

  • EIA project management support including the co-ordination of the technical consultant team.
  • Drafting screening, scoping and sustainability reports as well as ES chapters and non-technical summaries.
  • Input to advice regarding minimisation of environmental risks associated with potential development sites.
  • Providing support to senior staff in meetings, public exhibitions and with co-ordination and publication of the ES.
  • Assisting senior staff with business development and client care.

Senior Environmental Planning Opportunity

The role will involve the following key responsibilities:-

  • EIA project management with the co-ordination of the team of technical consultants.
  • Drafting and management of screening and scoping, as well as ES chapters and non-technical summaries.
  • Review and edit of all technical reports.
  • Provision of environmental and sustainability advice to clients and the planning team.
  • Attending public consultation events to promote development proposals.
  • Assisting with preparation of proposals and tenders.
  • Business development and client care.
  • Mentoring junior environmental consultants.


The successful applicants will have the following attributes:-

  • Educated to degree level as a minimum and preferably have a master’s degree in EIA or a related environmental planning course with EIA content.
  • An excellent communicator.
  • Ability to organise and monitor the progress of large teams of consultants.
  • Strong report writing skills.
  • Working towards or attained Associate/Practitioner membership of IEMA (as applicable).

The Role

  • Preparation and co-ordination of planning applications for high profile retail developments;
  • Negotiation of retail planning applications through to a successful determination;
  • Preparation of sequential assessments and town centre health checks;
  • Preparation of accurate and concise Retail Assessments. Experience in undertaking quantitative retail analysis is essential;
  • Project management of multi-disciplinary teams and regularly reporting to and advising clients;
  • Assisting in the preparation of Proofs of Evidence and Statement of Common Ground for use at Public Inquiries as well as liaising with the Planning Inspectorate; and
  • Business development responsibilities and client care.

Key Attributes

  • An RTPI or RICS accredited Planning and/or Development degree;
  • A Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute;
  • 2 - 7 years post degree qualification experience at a planning consultancy.
